It sounds nothing like About.com. It seems more like a direct response to Wikipedia.

How so? About.com is a series of "guides" where users "share their passions, expertise and how-to information with visitors every day". Google Khol is a series of "knols" where users "cover all topics, from scientific concepts, to medical information, from geographical and historical, to entertainment, from product information, to how-to-fix-it instructions". Both websites highlight the authors of the articles to give reputation of the information.

Wikipedia is a... wiki. Lots of people edit a topic. Most are anonymous. The authors that contributed are not highlighted on the main page of the article. It covers more factual items than how-to guides.

I'm not sure how you came to this conclusion.
